Why a School?

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” — Nelson Mandela
Education saves lives. It gives children the skills they need to escape poverty, live healthily and have hope for the future. Simply going to school each day can transform the lives of children living in conflict. The right to go to school belongs to every child. Tens of thousands of refugee children in Sudan do not go to school -- and have not for as long as five years! When the crisis is over, it is likely to take years for the education system to recover, during which time these children will have lost out on an education and its benefits.

Let me highlight one very telling request from a document received by Mia Farrow on August 10th, 2008 from the leaders of the Goz Amir refugee camp in Darfur regarding their great need for schools:
"If [our children] are uneducated this means there will be more war in the future.
Education is the way for people to find things in common other than their ethnicity."

Our “Building a School in Sudan by 2010” is part of Save the Children's Rewrite the Future campaign to get three million out-of-school children living in conflict-affected areas into school by 2010.  Please follow the link to learn more.
