FAQ / Details about Our School in Sudan
1) Can you add any detail about the facilities that the school will provide?
Our school will have four to eight classrooms, offices for the teachers, eight latrines, a water system, and funding for five years. Proposed Site of School: In Sudan, at a location to be determined by Save the Children at the time of construction, depending on the greatest need at that time. We’ve set the goal of raising $100,000 because costs are expected to rise by 2010, when we expect to meet our goal. Furthermore, I can tell you lunch will not be provided by the school (children often have a break in their day and go home), and that it will be a primary school, for ages 5 and older.
2) What will happen if the conditions in Darfur, that have only gotten progressively worse, preclude building the school when you are ready to begin? A dark, tough question.
We don’t want to spend three years working towards building a school only to have it destroyed. Save the Children was very clear from the start that we would not be building the school in Darfur, but rather in a much more stable region of Sudan which had a great influx of refugees from Darfur. 3) How could our group best help the project? Help you fund raise?
Absolutely. Many groups have scheduled independent fundraisers benefiting our school. It will take many, many fundraisers spread out over a very wide area in order to reach our ambitious goal. Can we help publicize future fund-raising events? This would be of great benefit. I would be glad to have you do this, especially for this year’s major event, our October 26th Rally/Walkathon. Can we help provide equipment or teaching supplies for the school? Transportation/shipping costs are exceedingly high. It is best to focus on meeting our goal of raising $100,000 to provide a fully furnished school through Save the Children’s mechanisms. You can also print our brochure, or modify it to highlight your own local event.
