About the size of Texas, the Darfur region of Sudan is home to racially mixed tribes of settled peasants, who identify as African, and nomadic herders, who identify as Arab. Sudan has seen 22 years of civil war which has helped create a country with one of the worst socio-economic indicators in the world. In 2003, ethnic battles erupted between Arab-African rebel forces and black Africans, resulting in over 200,000 dead and over 2.5 million people displaced by violence. Many have lost their homes, family members, and their physical and emotional security. In addition, because of the war, many children live under the threat of military violence, as well as the possibility of exploitation and abuse. They also often face food and water shortages, inadequate / non-existent healthcare and little hope for a decent education.
